Fast and Furious 7 was almost halfway finished, but Paul Walker’s untimely tragic demise temporarily halted production and caused Universal Pictures to consider various alternate plans.
Paul Walker, who was 40 when he died along with the car’s driver (his friend and business partner Roger Rodas, 38), will still appear in Fast & Furious 7, though Universal Pictures hasn’t officially announced if they will have the character Walker plays, Brian O’Connor, die in the film, or if they might decide to possibly finish the movie with someone else, such as Paul’s brother, Cody Walker, in the role of O’Connor.
Cody looks a lot like his brother, Paul, so he might be perfect at filling in for him to completeFast and Furious 7 and even appearing in future installments in the Fast and Furious franchise if Universal Pictures decides to keep the O’Connor character as an integral part of the franchise.
Since 2001, the Fast and Furious franchise has grossed nearly $2.4 billion around the world.Fast and Furious 6, on its own, earned $789 million. Production of Fast and Furious 7 stopped due to the Thanksgiving holiday when the red Porsche Carrera GT Rodas was driving hit a lamp post, then a tree, before bursting into flames and exploding.
There is an ongoing investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department into the cause of the car crash. So far, they haven’t detected any signs of mechanical problems and there is no indication that roadway conditions or debris caused the Porsche to crash. Law enforcement officials believe that the high rate of speed the car was traveling at might be a possible cause of the crash that claimed the lives of Paul Walker and Roger Rodas.
Universal Pictures had initially planned to resume shooting Fast & Furious 7 two days after the Porsche crash, but they later decided to indefinitely suspend production of the film. There were even rumors that the studio might decide to scrap the project altogether, and try to come up with a different script.
Production on Fast and Furious 7 has been suspended for the past three weeks as Universal executives met with the movie’s producer, Neal Moritz, to decide how to continue on with filming Fast and Furious 7.
Though the date of April 2015 has been referred to by Vin Diesel on his Facebook page, as well as being mentioned by Universal Pictures as the date it will be released, production of Fast and Furious 7 has not yet resumed. As it stands currently, the movie’s release has been delayed at least until the date Vin Diesel and Universal Pictures mentioned, April 2015, if not even longer.
